The "market place" in Liège is a veritable forum for the city and is home to many listed buildings including two major monuments: the Perron and the Town Hall.
The Perron is the symbol of the city’s freedoms and is at the heart of its coat of arms. Moved to Bruges in 1467 by Charles the Bold, it was only returned after his death in 1477. The current Perron monument was rebuilt by Jean Del Cour after the previous one was knocked over by a violent storm in 1693.
Traditionally called La Violette, in homage to the name of the building that played host to the city council in the Middle Ages, the Town Hall was bombarded in 1691 by the troops of Louis XIV. Reconstruction started in 1714 and was completed in 1718.
