Since 1979, the Châtaigneraie is located in a manor house dating from the first half of the 19th century. Following its recognition by the Wallonia-Brussels Federation in 1984, the Châtaigneraie aims to promote contemporary art by proposing varied events to encourage public awareness. The Centre contributes to local art history by presenting modern art movements which influenced the region and through retrospectives. There is also an experimentation area for young artists. Last but not least, the Châtaigneraie works closely alongside other Belgium-based or foreign art-focused institutions.
