From Charlemagne, who was known to have a palace in Herstal, to the start of the 20th century, the history of Herstal occupies several rooms. Nicknamed the “city of the armourers”, many objects are on display including the Demoiselles de Herstal, the name given to the motorbikes (FN, Sarolea, Gillet, Brondoit) that were manufactured in the city’s work…

Fort Pontisse
?This 3-hectare fort was built between 1888 and 1892. In 1914, it was the first fort to be bombarded by the 42-cm shells fired by the Big Bertha guns of the German Army. During the inter-war period, it was rearmed and was again bombarded in 1940. An association has purchased the site to ensure it is preserved. Some of the former military premises have been transformed into stables.

Musée de la Fraise et de la Vie d'antan
This museum places you in an era when Vottem was synonymous with strawberry growing. This very well-known fruit was the reason for Vottem’s renown. It is therefore logical to dedicate a museum to it, how it is grown, the farming methods of the era and life at the time in general. The museum also looks into life in bygone days, in both moments of joy and pain alike.
